1. For sale

Writing & Everyday · Classified Ad Abbreviations · also used in texting

Marks an item or property as being offered for sale in forums, classified ads, signs and real estate, as in "FS: road bike."

Example: FS: 2018 kayak with paddle and life vest, $400, pickup in Portland only.

Forums often pair FS with FT (for trade), as in "FS/FT." Real estate signs and listings use FSBO for homes sold by their owners. On teachers' correction marks, FS means fused sentence, an unrelated use.

2. For sure

Texting & Internet Slang · Gen Z Slang Abbreviations

Expresses agreement or confirmation, as in "u coming?" / "fs." Common among Gen Z and young millennials in texts and DMs.

Example: Fs, I'll bring the speaker and some snacks.

Neutral and friendly, roughly equal to "definitely." In resale forums FS means "for sale," and in other contexts "feasibility study," so the reply position helps distinguish the slang. Some users double it as "fs fs" for emphasis.

3. Frozen section

Medical · Surgical Abbreviations

Rapid pathology technique in which tissue removed during surgery is frozen, thinly sliced and stained so a pathologist can give a diagnosis within about 20 minutes while the patient is still anesthetized. It guides decisions such as whether margins are clear or whether a lymph node contains cancer.

Example: FS of the margin shows atypical cells posteriorly; additional tissue taken.

Frozen section accuracy is high but lower than that of permanent sections, which take a day or more and occasionally revise the diagnosis. Fatty tissue freezes poorly, limiting the method for breast tissue and nodal fat. The technique dates to the early 20th century.

4. Finish-to-start

Business & Finance · Project Management Abbreviations

Most common type of dependency between scheduled activities: the successor cannot start until the predecessor finishes, such as painting only after drywall is complete.

Example: Set an FS link between "pour concrete" and "frame walls" with a seven-day lag for curing.

Scheduling tools such as Microsoft Project default to FS links. Lags add waiting time after the predecessor, and leads allow overlap.

5. Flight Sergeant

Military · British Military Rank Abbreviations

RAF senior non-commissioned rank at NATO grade OR-7, above sergeant, worn as three chevrons beneath a crown. Flight sergeants supervise technical teams and sections, and aircrew flight sergeants fly as specialist crew members.

Example: FS Hall supervised the engine change on the Chinook overnight.

Commonly called "Chiefy" by junior airmen. The rank is equivalent to a staff sergeant in the Army. Above it lie warrant officer and, for aircrew, master aircrew. In US government usage, FS more often refers to the Foreign Service.

6. Free safety

Sports · American Football Abbreviations

Safety who typically plays deep in the middle of the field, reading the quarterback and helping on long passes. Free safeties need range and ball skills more than tackling power.

Example: The FS played single-high all game, taking away the deep middle of the field.

"Free" because he usually has no fixed man-to-man assignment. In single-high coverages such as Cover 1 and Cover 3, the free safety is alone in the deep middle. Ed Reed and Earl Thomas were celebrated free safeties.

7. Fused sentence

Writing & Everyday · Proofreading and Correction Mark Abbreviations

Two independent clauses run together with no punctuation or conjunction get this mark, as in "She called he didn't answer." It is the strictest type of run-on sentence.

Example: The margin note FS points to "The game ended we drove home," which needs a period after "ended."

Many composition handbooks pair FS with CS (comma splice) in their lists of correction symbols. Reading aloud usually reveals where one complete thought ends and the next begins. The fixes mirror those for comma splices: a period, a semicolon, or a comma with a coordinating conjunction.
