1. Diabetes mellitus
Medical · Endocrinology & Diabetes Abbreviations
Group of metabolic diseases marked by chronically high blood glucose from defective insulin secretion, insulin action or both. Diagnosis requires an A1C of 6.5 percent or more, fasting glucose of 126 mg/dL or more, a 2-hour OGTT value of 200 mg/dL or more, or a random glucose of 200 with classic symptoms.
Example: DM type 2 since 2015, A1C 8.4 on metformin; add semaglutide given ASCVD history.
"Diabetes" comes from the Greek for a siphon, describing heavy urination, and "mellitus" from the Latin for honey-sweet, because the urine tastes of sugar; the name separates it from diabetes insipidus, an unrelated water-balance disorder. In the US about 38 million people have diabetes, and the International Diabetes Federation counts well over half a billion adults worldwide. Notes often write DM1 or DM2 for the types. In rheumatology DM means dermatomyositis, and in texting a direct message.
2. Direct message
Texting & Internet Slang · Social Media Abbreviations
Private message sent between users on a social platform such as Instagram, X (Twitter), TikTok or Discord, as opposed to a public post or comment. Used as a noun ("check your DMs") and a verb ("DM me").
Example: Interested in the bike? DM me for the price and pickup details.
Twitter popularized the term for its private messages, and Instagram's messaging feature, launched as Instagram Direct in 2013, made "DMs" universal. "Sliding into someone's DMs" means messaging them privately, often flirtatiously. In tabletop gaming DM means dungeon master. Acceptable in casual work chat, as in "I'll DM you the link."
3. Dark matter
Science & Engineering · Astronomy & Space Abbreviations
Invisible form of matter that does not emit, absorb or reflect light but reveals itself through gravity, holding galaxies and galaxy clusters together. Dark matter outweighs ordinary matter about five to one, yet its nature, most likely an undiscovered particle, remains one of the biggest open questions in physics.
Example: Galaxy rotation curves stay flat far from the center, suggesting a large halo of DM.
Fritz Zwicky inferred "dunkle Materie" in the Coma galaxy cluster in 1933, and in the 1970s Vera Rubin and Kent Ford showed that stars in spiral galaxies orbit too fast to be held by visible matter alone. The Bullet Cluster, analyzed in 2006, is often cited as direct evidence. Candidates include WIMPs, axions and sterile neutrinos.
4. Dungeon master
Texting & Internet Slang · Gaming Slang Abbreviations
Person who runs a Dungeons & Dragons game, describing the world, playing all non-player characters, setting challenges and applying the rules for the other players.
Example: Our DM made us fight a dragon at level three, total chaos.
The title appears in the original 1974 Dungeons & Dragons and in the Dungeon Master's Guide, first published in 1979. Other tabletop games use GM (game master). Good DMs are prized, and "DM burnout" is a common topic in TTRPG communities. Elsewhere online, DM is far more often a private direct message.
5. Dermatomyositis
Medical · Musculoskeletal & Rheumatology Abbreviations
Inflammatory myopathy causing symmetric weakness of the proximal muscles with characteristic skin signs: a violet heliotrope rash on the eyelids and scaly Gottron papules over the knuckles. In adults it is associated with cancer, so screening is part of the workup.
Example: Proximal weakness, Gottron papules, CK 4,200: DM, CT chest-abdomen-pelvis for malignancy screen.
Myositis-specific antibodies predict features: anti-MDA5 with rapidly progressive lung disease and anti-TIF1-gamma with cancer. Some patients have the skin disease without muscle weakness (amyopathic DM). In nearly all other contexts DM means diabetes mellitus, so rheumatology notes usually make the meaning clear. Intravenous immunoglobulin is FDA-approved for it.
6. Decimeter (dm)
Units & Measurements · Metric and SI Unit Abbreviations
Ten centimeters, one tenth of a meter. A cube 1 dm on each side holds exactly one liter, the relationship that ties the liter to the meter.
Example: A box measuring 1 dm on each side holds exactly 1 liter of water.
Commonly taught in schools in Europe, Russia and China but rarely used in everyday measurement. The cubic decimeter (dm³) is an official alternative name for the liter and appears on some European container and engine specifications. In English text, DM more often means direct message or the former Deutsche Mark.
7. Direct mail
Business & Finance · Marketing & Advertising Abbreviations
Printed advertising sent by post to homes or businesses, such as catalogs, postcards, letters and coupons, often personalized and targeted using mailing lists. Response can be tracked with offer codes, personalized URLs and QR codes.
Example: Our DM postcards to past customers drove a 4% response rate.
In the US, the Postal Service's Every Door Direct Mail (EDDM) service lets businesses mail to every address on a carrier route without a list. DM is a core form of direct marketing, a broader term for any channel seeking a measurable response. In platform jargon the same letters stand for a private direct message.
8. District manager
Business & Finance · Job Title Abbreviations
Manager responsible for several stores, branches or restaurants within a district, overseeing store managers, sales targets, staffing, compliance and operations. District managers are common in retail chains, fast food, pharmacies and branch banking.
Example: The DM approved extra holiday staffing for all eight stores in her district.
District managers typically report to a regional manager or regional vice president and spend much of their time traveling between locations. On social media, DM means direct message, by far the more common meaning today.
9. Deathmatch
Texting & Internet Slang · Gaming Slang Abbreviations
Game mode in which players score by killing opponents, typically as a free-for-all, with the most kills winning. One of the oldest multiplayer shooter modes.
Example: Hop into DM for ten minutes to warm up your aim.
Popularized by Doom (1993), whose co-creator John Romero is often credited with coining the term. Valorant and Counter-Strike offer deathmatch as an aim-practice mode. On social media DM means direct message, and in tabletop games dungeon master.
10. Dangling modifier
Writing & Everyday · Proofreading and Correction Mark Abbreviations
Indicates a modifying phrase with no clear word to modify in the sentence, often producing an unintended meaning, as in "Walking to school, the rain started."
Example: Beside "Having finished the homework, the TV was turned on," the teacher wrote DM.
The fix is to name the doer right after the phrase ("Having finished the homework, I turned on the TV") or to rewrite the phrase as a clause. Dangling participles are the most common type. A few set phrases, such as "considering the weather," are accepted as standard. Outside editing, the same letters usually mean a direct message.
11. Dominica
Geography & Places · Country Code Abbreviations
Dominica, a mountainous Caribbean island nation with Roseau as its capital, markets itself as the Nature Isle of the Caribbean and is often confused with the Dominican Republic. Its alpha-3 code is DMA.
Example: Hurricane relief shipments to DM were held at the port in Roseau.
The Dominican Republic is DO, not DM. Dominica's .dm domain is little used. DM also means direct message on social media.
12. Developed markets
Business & Finance · Stock Market & Investing Abbreviations
Advanced economies with mature, liquid financial markets and strong institutions, such as the United States, Japan, the UK, Germany, Canada and Australia. Index providers classify countries as developed, emerging or frontier based on economic size, market accessibility and openness.
Example: The pension fund cut DM equities to 45 percent of its portfolio and raised its EM allocation.
MSCI World is the standard developed-markets equity index. Classifications are reviewed annually and can change, as when MSCI reclassified Greece from developed to emerging in 2013. In everyday digital communication, DM means direct message.
13. Doctorate of Medicine
Education & Academia · Degree Abbreviations
Super-specialty medical degree in India, taken after an MD, in fields such as cardiology, neurology, gastroenterology, nephrology and medical oncology. It typically requires three years of training and admission through the NEET-SS exam.
Example: The hospital's interventional cardiologist holds an MBBS, MD and DM in cardiology.
Written D.M. In the UK, Oxford and Southampton use DM (Doctor of Medicine) for a research doctorate in medicine, comparable to the MD at other British universities. In India the DM is the medical counterpart of the surgical MCh. Outside medicine, DM usually means a direct message on social media.
