1. Digital Markets Act
Government & Politics · World Government Abbreviations
EU regulation that imposes obligations on designated "gatekeeper" platforms, such as Alphabet, Amazon, Apple, ByteDance, Meta and Microsoft, to promote competition, for example by allowing alternative app stores and banning self-preferencing.
Example: Because of the DMA, iPhone users in the EU can install apps from alternative marketplaces.
Gatekeeper obligations applied from March 2024, and the Commission issued its first non-compliance fines, against Apple and Meta, in April 2025. Fines can reach 10 percent of global turnover, or 20 percent for repeat violations. In computing, DMA also means direct memory access.
2. Designated Market Area
Business & Finance · Marketing & Advertising Abbreviations · also used in geography
Nielsen's division of the United States into 210 television markets, each a group of counties served by the same local stations, used to plan, buy and target TV, radio, digital and out-of-home advertising.
Example: We're testing the campaign in two midsize DMAs before going national.
New York is the largest DMA by households. Digital platforms adopted DMAs for geotargeting. In computing, DMA means direct memory access, and in EU law it is the Digital Markets Act.
3. Direct memory access
Technology & Computing · Computer Hardware Abbreviations
Feature that lets devices such as storage controllers, network cards and graphics cards transfer data to and from main memory without the processor handling every byte, freeing the CPU for other work.
Example: The capture card uses DMA to stream video frames straight into memory.
ISA-era PCs assigned numbered DMA channels by hand, much like IRQs. PCI and PCIe devices use bus mastering instead. Because DMA gives devices direct memory access, malicious peripherals plugged into Thunderbolt or FireWire ports could read memory, a risk mitigated by IOMMU protection, which Windows calls Kernel DMA Protection.
4. Doctor of Musical Arts
Education & Academia · Degree Abbreviations
Doctoral degree in music performance, composition or conducting that combines advanced artistic work with scholarly study, typically including a series of recitals and a written document. Juilliard, Eastman, Yale and many university music schools award it.
Example: After her DMA recitals at Eastman, she joined the piano faculty of a state university.
Written D.M.A. The DMA is the usual terminal degree for performers who want to teach at the college level, while the PhD in music is aimed at musicologists and theorists. Indiana University awards a similar degree titled Doctor of Music (DM). Admission requires a demanding audition.
