1. Democratic Socialists of America
Government & Politics · Political Abbreviations
Membership organization, describing itself as the largest socialist group in the United States, that endorses candidates, most of whom run as Democrats, and campaigns for policies such as single-payer health care and tenant protections. It is not a registered political party.
Example: The DSA chapter knocked on thousands of doors for the city council candidate.
Founded in 1982 through a merger of the Democratic Socialist Organizing Committee, led by writer Michael Harrington, and the New American Movement. Membership grew sharply after Bernie Sanders's 2016 presidential campaign. Zohran Mamdani, elected mayor of New York City in 2025, is among its best-known members. In EU law, DSA means the Digital Services Act.
2. Digital Services Act
Government & Politics · World Government Abbreviations
EU regulation that sets obligations for online platforms on illegal content, transparency, advertising and user protection, with the strictest rules for very large platforms and search engines with more than 45 million EU users.
Example: The Commission opened DSA proceedings against the platform over its handling of disinformation.
Adopted in 2022, it became fully applicable on February 17, 2024. Fines can reach 6 percent of global annual turnover. It is a companion to the Digital Markets Act. In US politics, DSA means the Democratic Socialists of America.
3. Digital subtraction angiography
Medical · Medical Imaging Abbreviations
Catheter angiography technique that records an image before contrast and digitally subtracts it from images after injection, leaving only the opacified blood vessels. It remains the reference standard for brain aneurysms and arteriovenous malformations and guides interventions such as thrombectomy and embolization.
Example: Six-vessel cerebral DSA: no aneurysm identified; the CTA finding was artifact.
Because it is invasive, DSA carries small risks of stroke, bleeding and vessel injury, so non-invasive CTA and MRA come first for most diagnostic questions. Three-dimensional rotational DSA helps plan aneurysm coiling. Patient movement ruins the subtraction, sometimes requiring sedation.
4. Data structures and algorithms
Technology & Computing · Programming Abbreviations
The core computer-science subject covering how data is organized, in arrays, linked lists, trees, graphs and hash tables, and how problems are solved efficiently through sorting, searching and dynamic programming. It dominates technical interview preparation.
Example: She spent three months on DSA practice before her big-tech interviews.
Interview platforms such as LeetCode and HackerRank organize problems by DSA topic and difficulty, with efficiency discussed in Big O notation. Niklaus Wirth's 1976 book "Algorithms + Data Structures = Programs" captured the idea that the two belong together. In cryptography DSA means the Digital Signature Algorithm.
5. Digital Signature Algorithm
Technology & Computing · Cybersecurity Abbreviations
A public-key digital signature standard proposed by the US National Institute of Standards and Technology in 1991 and based on discrete logarithms. It was used in government systems and for SSH keys before elliptic-curve signatures took over.
Example: OpenSSH no longer accepts DSA host keys, so regenerate them as Ed25519.
Adopted as FIPS 186 in 1994. The 2023 revision, FIPS 186-5, no longer approves DSA for generating new signatures. OpenSSH disabled DSA keys by default in 2015 and later dropped support entirely. In programming DSA usually means data structures and algorithms.
