ECJ stands for European Court of Justice, a court abbreviation also used in government.

Common name for the Court of Justice, the higher of the two courts within the Court of Justice of the European Union. It has one judge from each EU member state, assisted by Advocates General, and gives binding rulings on the interpretation of the EU treaties and legislation.

Example: Following the ECJ's ruling, the EU-US data-transfer framework was declared invalid.

Usage notes

Founded in 1952 as the court of the European Coal and Steel Community. Van Gend en Loos (1963) and Costa v ENEL (1964) established the direct effect and supremacy of EU law. Since the Treaty of Lisbon (2009) the official name is simply the Court of Justice, but ECJ remains standard in news and academic writing.
