ECtHR stands for European Court of Human Rights, a court abbreviation.
International court in Strasbourg that rules on applications alleging violations of the European Convention on Human Rights by the Council of Europe's member states. Individuals can apply once they have exhausted domestic remedies, and judgments finding a violation bind the state concerned.
Example: The applicant took her case to the ECtHR, alleging a breach of her right to private life.
Usage notes
Lawyers prefer ECtHR for the court and ECHR for the Convention, though newspapers often use ECHR for both. Established in 1959, it became a full-time court in 1998. It is an organ of the Council of Europe, not the European Union, and Russia ceased to be a party after its expulsion in 2022.
