E.D. Tex. stands for United States District Court for the Eastern District of Texas, a court abbreviation.
East Texas federal trial court with divisions in Marshall, Tyler, Sherman, Beaumont, Texarkana and other cities. The Marshall division became the busiest patent venue in the United States in the 2000s and 2010s, attracting patent owners with fast schedules, experienced judges and juries regarded as favorable to plaintiffs.
Example: The licensing company filed another infringement complaint in E.D. Tex., Marshall Division, against the phone maker.
Usage notes
Its patent docket shrank after TC Heartland LLC v. Kraft Foods (2017) restricted where domestic corporations can be sued for patent infringement, though it remains among the busiest. Patent appeals go to the Federal Circuit in Washington; other appeals go to the Fifth Circuit in New Orleans.
