ECB stands for European Central Bank, an economics abbreviation also used in government.
Central bank for the euro area, based in Frankfurt, which sets monetary policy for the countries that use the euro, aiming for 2 percent inflation over the medium term. It also directly supervises the largest eurozone banks.
Example: The ECB cut its deposit rate by a quarter point, citing easing inflation.
Usage notes
Created in 1998, the ECB is governed by a Governing Council of the six Executive Board members and the governors of the euro-area national central banks. Its presidents have included Mario Draghi, whose 2012 pledge to do "whatever it takes" calmed the debt crisis, and Christine Lagarde, president since 2019. Its main policy rate is now the deposit facility rate.
