1. Data processing agreement

Law & Legal · Contract Abbreviations

Contract between a business that controls personal data and a vendor that processes it on the business's behalf, specifying the subject matter, duration, security measures, subprocessors, audit rights and deletion of data. Article 28 of the EU General Data Protection Regulation requires such terms.

Example: Before uploading customer records, the vendor's DPA must be signed and its subprocessor list approved.

Also called a data processing addendum when attached to a main contract. US state privacy laws, including California's, impose similar contract requirements on service providers. For transfers out of the EU, the DPA usually incorporates the standard contractual clauses (SCCs). In criminal law, DPA means deferred prosecution agreement.

2. Down payment assistance

Business & Finance · Real Estate & Mortgage Abbreviations

Grants, forgivable loans or deferred second mortgages that help homebuyers, usually first-time or lower-income buyers, cover the down payment and closing costs. Programs are run by state housing finance agencies, cities, nonprofits and some lenders.

Example: With $15,000 in DPA from the state, we only needed $3,000 of our own money.

Many DPA second loans are forgiven after the buyer lives in the home for a set number of years, while others are repaid when the home is sold or refinanced. Programs usually impose income limits, price limits and homebuyer education. In advertising, DPA means dynamic product ads.

3. Deferred prosecution agreement

Law & Legal · Criminal Law Abbreviations

Agreement in which prosecutors file charges, usually against a company, but defer prosecution for a set period while the defendant pays penalties, cooperates and meets compliance requirements such as an independent monitor. Charges are dismissed if the terms are met.

Example: The bank entered a DPA, paying $1.3 billion and agreeing to a three-year monitorship.

The US Department of Justice has used DPAs extensively since the early 2000s for corporate crimes such as foreign bribery and fraud; because charges are filed, a court must approve the speedy-trial waiver. The United Kingdom introduced judicially supervised DPAs in 2014. In data law, DPA means data processing agreement.

4. Deutsche Presse-Agentur

Organizations & Companies · Media and Broadcasting Abbreviations

Germany's largest news agency, providing news, photos and graphics in German, English, Spanish and Arabic to media outlets around the world. Headquartered in Hamburg, with its central newsroom in Berlin.

Example: According to DPA, the chancellor will travel to Brussels on Thursday.

Founded in 1949 in Goslar through the merger of news agencies from the Western occupation zones. It is owned by German media companies, none of which may hold more than a small share. Often written dpa in lowercase in German usage.

5. Dynamic product ads

Business & Finance · Marketing & Advertising Abbreviations

Meta's automated ads that pull products from a catalog and show each person items they viewed or are likely to want, used for retargeting and prospecting on Facebook and Instagram.

Example: DPA retargeting reminds shoppers of the exact jacket they left in their cart.

Launched in 2015, the format was later renamed Advantage+ catalog ads, though DPA remains the common shorthand. In real estate, DPA means down payment assistance.
