1. Document Object Model

Technology & Computing · Internet & Web Abbreviations

The tree of objects that browsers build from an HTML or XML document, with nodes for each element, attribute and piece of text. JavaScript reads and changes the page by manipulating the DOM, for example adding elements or updating text after a click.

Example: The script runs before the DOM is ready, so the button lookup returns null.

Early browsers had incompatible object models during the late-1990s browser wars; the W3C published DOM Level 1 in 1998 to standardize them, and the WHATWG now maintains the DOM Living Standard. Frameworks such as React use a "virtual DOM" to batch changes efficiently. Pages with too many nodes render slowly, which performance audits flag as an "excessive DOM size".

2. Days on market

Business & Finance · Real Estate & Mortgage Abbreviations

Number of days a property has been listed for sale before going under contract or being withdrawn, a key indicator of how quickly homes sell and of a listing's pricing.

Example: At 74 DOM in a hot market, the seller needs to cut the price.

Cumulative days on market (CDOM) adds earlier listing periods, preventing sellers from resetting the count by withdrawing and relisting. Buyers often see a high DOM as room to negotiate.
