HTML stands for HyperText Markup Language, an Internet & web abbreviation.

The standard markup language for web pages, describing structure and meaning with elements written as tags, such as headings, paragraphs, links, images, forms and tables. Browsers parse HTML into the DOM, while CSS controls presentation and JavaScript adds behavior.

Example: View the page's HTML with Ctrl+U to check whether the meta description is set.

Usage notes

Created by Tim Berners-Lee at CERN in 1990 and 1991, loosely based on SGML; the first public description, "HTML Tags", listed 18 elements. Versions were standardized by the IETF and then the W3C (HTML 4.01 in 1999), and since 2019 the WHATWG maintains a single HTML Living Standard with no version numbers. HTML is a markup language rather than a programming language, a distinction that surfaces in many online debates. Tag names are case-insensitive, but lowercase is the convention.
