ES6 stands for ECMAScript 6, an Internet & web abbreviation.
The 2015 edition of the ECMAScript standard behind JavaScript and the largest update in the language's history. It introduced let and const, arrow functions, classes, modules, promises, template literals, destructuring and default parameters.
Example: The legacy bundle is transpiled from ES6 to ES5 so it still runs in old browsers.
Usage notes
Officially named ECMAScript 2015 (ES2015); afterward Ecma's TC39 committee switched to yearly editions named by year, such as ES2020. Developers still say "ES6" loosely to mean modern JavaScript syntax. The previous edition, ES5, appeared in 2009, and an ambitious ES4 was abandoned. Tools such as Babel convert ES6 code for older browsers.
