1. Intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance

Military · Military Term Abbreviations

Integrated collection of information about adversaries and the environment by aircraft, drones, satellites, ground teams and sensors, and its processing into usable intelligence. It feeds targeting and planning at every level.

Example: ISR drones watched the compound for days before the raid.

Demand for ISR soared during the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, driving the expansion of drone fleets such as the MQ-1 Predator and MQ-9 Reaper. Commanders often describe ISR as a scarce asset allocated by priority.

2. In-stent restenosis

Medical · Cardiology Abbreviations

Gradual renarrowing inside a previously placed stent, caused mainly by scar tissue growth (neointimal hyperplasia) and sometimes by new atherosclerosis. It usually appears within months of bare-metal stenting and is much less common with drug-eluting stents.

Example: Recurrent angina 8 months after PCI; angiography shows focal ISR treated with a drug-coated balloon.

Defined angiographically as narrowing of 50 percent or more within the stent or 5 mm beyond its edges. Unlike stent thrombosis, a sudden clot that causes a heart attack, restenosis develops slowly and typically brings back angina. Treatment options include another drug-eluting stent, a drug-coated balloon or bypass surgery.

3. Incremental static regeneration

Technology & Computing · Internet & Web Abbreviations

A Next.js feature that rebuilds individual static pages in the background after a set time or on demand, so a site keeps the speed of static HTML while picking up content changes without a full rebuild.

Example: Product pages use ISR with a 60-second revalidate, so price changes appear within a minute.

Introduced in Next.js 9.5 in 2020. Visitors receive the cached page while a fresh version is generated, a pattern similar to the HTTP stale-while-revalidate cache directive. Other frameworks and hosting platforms offer comparable features under different names.
