1. British Indian Ocean Territory
Geography & Places · Country Code Abbreviations
UK territory consisting of the Chagos Archipelago, including Diego Garcia, site of a joint UK–US military base. Its .io domain became a favorite of tech startups because io suggests input/output, and in 2025 Britain signed a treaty to transfer sovereignty to Mauritius.
Example: Developers love short .io addresses, often without knowing the domain belongs to IO.
The Chagossian population was forcibly removed between 1967 and 1973 to make way for the base. UK ratification of the Mauritius treaty stalled in 2026, and the deal had already raised questions about the future of .io, which depends on the code remaining in the ISO list.
2. Intraosseous
Medical · Medication Route Abbreviations
Emergency route in which a needle is drilled or pushed into bone marrow, usually the proximal tibia or humeral head, giving rapid access to the circulation when veins cannot be found. Any resuscitation drug or fluid that can be given IV can be given IO.
Example: Unable to obtain IV after two attempts; IO placed right proximal tibia, epinephrine given.
Battery-powered drivers such as the EZ-IO made IO access routine in prehospital and emergency care. Resuscitation guidelines recommend IV or IO access over the endotracheal route. Flow is improved by pressure bags, and IO lines are generally replaced within 24 hours because of infection risk.
3. Insertion order
Business & Finance · Marketing & Advertising Abbreviations
Signed contract between an advertiser or agency and a publisher or ad network specifying the ad placements, flight dates, impressions, rates and terms of a media buy.
Example: Sales won't schedule the campaign until the IO is countersigned.
Traditional IOs have partly given way to programmatic buying, but they remain standard for sponsorships and direct deals. In mortgages, IO means interest-only.
4. Interest-only
Business & Finance · Real Estate & Mortgage Abbreviations
Loan structure in which the borrower pays only interest for a set period, often 5 to 10 years, before payments rise to cover principal as well. Interest-only loans lower early payments but build no equity during the IO period.
Example: The investor chose a 10-year IO loan to maximize cash flow on the rental.
Interest-only features exclude a loan from qualified mortgage status, so residential IO loans are mostly jumbo or non-QM products today. They are common in commercial real estate. In advertising, IO means insertion order.
5. Information operations
Military · Military Term Abbreviations
Military use of information-related capabilities, such as psychological operations, deception, electronic warfare and cyber operations, to influence, disrupt or protect decision-making by adversaries and audiences.
Example: The IO cell drafted leaflets and radio messages urging fighters to surrender.
Doctrine has evolved; recent US publications describe "operations in the information environment" and "information activities." IO is coordinated on staffs by a dedicated officer or cell. In other fields, IO means input/output or the Indian Ocean.
