inj stands for Injection, a medication route abbreviation.
Label and order abbreviation for a drug given by needle and syringe or as an injectable product, as in "ceftriaxone inj" or "insulin inj". It names the dosage form but not the route, which must be stated separately as IV, IM, subcut or another route.
Example: Ketorolac inj 15 mg IV q6h PRN pain, max 5 days.
Usage notes
Also written "Inj." on drug labels. ISMP warns about a related form, "IJ", which has been mistaken for IV or "intrajugular". Some injections are labeled for only one route; for example, penicillin G benzathine (Bicillin L-A) must never be given IV.
