JVD stands for Jugular venous distension, a cardiology abbreviation.
Visible bulging of the internal or external jugular veins in the neck, a bedside sign of raised right-sided filling pressure. It is checked with the patient reclining at 30 to 45 degrees and supports diagnoses such as heart failure, fluid overload, cardiac tamponade and tension pneumothorax.
Example: Exam: JVD to the angle of the jaw at 45 degrees, bibasilar crackles, 2+ leg edema.
Usage notes
JVD is a yes-or-no observation, whereas jugular venous pressure (JVP) is a measured height. Kussmaul's sign, a paradoxical rise in neck veins during inspiration, suggests constrictive pericarditis or restrictive cardiomyopathy. Hepatojugular reflux, a sustained rise during firm abdominal pressure, adds support for heart failure. Also spelled jugular venous distention.
