IDN stands for Internationalized domain name, an Internet & web abbreviation.
A domain name containing characters beyond basic ASCII, such as Arabic, Chinese, Cyrillic or accented Latin letters. Browsers display the native script, while DNS stores an ASCII form beginning with "xn--" called Punycode.
Example: The bakery's IDN münchen-brot.de is stored in DNS as an xn-- Punycode name.
Usage notes
Standardized as IDNA in 2003 and revised in 2008. Look-alike characters from different scripts enable homograph phishing, such as a Cyrillic "а" inside a fake bank domain, so browsers show the Punycode form when scripts are mixed suspiciously. Country-code TLDs in native scripts, such as .рф for Russia, are also IDNs.
