TLD stands for Top-level domain, an Internet & web abbreviation.
The last part of a domain name after the final dot, such as .com, .org, .uk or .app. TLDs are run by registry operators under ICANN's coordination and divided into generic TLDs and country-code TLDs.
Example: The .com was taken, so the startup registered the same name under the .io TLD.
Usage notes
The original generic TLDs created in 1985 were .com, .org, .net, .edu, .gov and .mil, plus .arpa for infrastructure. ICANN's 2012 program added more than a thousand new ones, from .app to .london. Each TLD sets its own rules and prices, and some are restricted to certain kinds of organizations.
