1. Staff Sergeant (US Army)
Military · US Army Rank Abbreviations
Army NCO rank at pay grade E-6, three chevrons above one rocker. A typical SSG leads an infantry squad of nine soldiers or a comparable section, and many serve as drill sergeants, recruiters or instructors before moving up.
Example: Squad leader SSG Brooks will conduct pre-combat inspections at 0500.
The Army writes SSG, while the Air Force and Marine Corps write SSgt, and in those services the grade differs (Air Force E-5, Marine E-6). Completion of the Advanced Leader Course is required before promotion to SSG. In conversation a staff sergeant is called "Sergeant," and AP style uses Staff Sgt. before a name.
2. Static site generation
Technology & Computing · Internet & Web Abbreviations
Building every page of a website into plain HTML files at build time, so they can be served instantly from a CDN without any server code running per request. The tools that do this are called static site generators.
Example: The docs site uses SSG, so every deploy rebuilds all 3,000 pages in about two minutes.
Jekyll (2008), which powers GitHub Pages, popularized the approach, followed by Hugo, Gatsby, Eleventy and Astro, and Next.js supports it too. Static sites are fast, cheap and hard to attack, but content changes require a rebuild, which incremental regeneration and on-demand builds address. The abbreviation covers both "generation" and "generator" depending on context.
