1. Upper respiratory infection
Medical · Respiratory Abbreviations
Infection of the nose, sinuses, throat or larynx, most often the common cold, caused mainly by rhinoviruses and other respiratory viruses. Symptoms include runny or stuffy nose, sore throat, sneezing and cough, usually resolving within 7 to 10 days.
Example: Viral URI x4 days, afebrile, lungs clear; supportive care, no antibiotics indicated.
Adults average two or three colds a year and young children more. Antibiotics do not help viral URIs and contribute to resistance, so stewardship programs target URI prescribing. Warning signs that suggest a bacterial complication include symptoms lasting more than 10 days or a "double worsening" after initial improvement. Also written URTI outside the US.
2. Uniform Resource Identifier
Technology & Computing · Internet & Web Abbreviations
A string that identifies a resource by location, by name, or both. URLs such as https://example.com and URNs such as urn:isbn:0451450523 are both kinds of URI, as are schemes like mailto: and tel:.
Example: The OAuth redirect URI must exactly match the one registered in the developer console.
The generic syntax is defined in RFC 3986 (2005), written by Tim Berners-Lee, Roy Fielding and Larry Masinter. Specifications and APIs often say URI where everyday speech says URL, and in practice the difference rarely matters. IRI (Internationalized Resource Identifier) extends URIs to allow Unicode characters. Pronounced as letters.
