1. Content warning
Texting & Internet Slang · Social Media Abbreviations
Notice at the start of a post or video alerting viewers to potentially distressing material, such as violence, illness, eating disorders or self-harm, so they can decide whether to continue.
Example: CW: discussion of pregnancy loss in this episode, please take care.
Mastodon and some other platforms have a built-in "CW" field that hides a post behind a warning. Often used interchangeably with TW (trigger warning), though some prefer CW as broader and less clinical. In other contexts CW is also the name of a US television network, unrelated to the warning sense.
2. The CW Television Network
Organizations & Companies · Media and Broadcasting Abbreviations
American broadcast television network formed by combining The WB and UPN, known for young-adult dramas and superhero series and later for sports and unscripted shows. Majority-owned by Nexstar Media Group since 2022.
Example: The superhero series ran for eight seasons on the CW.
Launched in September 2006; the name came from its original owners, CBS Corporation and Warner Bros. Its shows included Gossip Girl, Supernatural and the "Arrowverse" DC series. Nexstar bought a 75 percent stake in 2022 and refocused the network.
3. Cooperating witness
Law & Legal · Criminal Law Abbreviations · also used in government
Person, often charged or under investigation, who provides information or testimony to prosecutors in exchange for potential leniency, such as reduced charges or a sentencing reduction. Cooperating witnesses are central to prosecutions of drug organizations, gangs and white-collar schemes.
Example: The government's case rests largely on CW-1, the former chief financial officer.
Indictments and complaints refer to them anonymously as CW-1, CW-2 and so on. Unlike a confidential informant, a CW usually testifies at trial, and the defense may cross-examine about the cooperation deal. Prosecutors must disclose such agreements and other impeachment material under Giglio v. United States (1972).
4. Curaçao
Geography & Places · Country Code Abbreviations
Curaçao became a constituent country of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in 2010, when it received this code. Willemstad, the capital, has a colorful waterfront listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Example: Online casinos licensed in CW must display their license number.
Curaçao is a hub for online gambling licenses and gives its name to the blue orange liqueur. The alpha-3 code is CUW.
