1. Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease
Medical · Neurology Abbreviations
Most common inherited peripheral neuropathy, affecting roughly 1 in 2,500 people, causing slowly progressive weakness and wasting of the feet, lower legs and hands, high-arched feet and hammertoes. Type 1A, the most common form, results from a duplication of the PMP22 gene.
Example: Pes cavus, foot drop and inverted champagne-bottle legs with uniformly slow NCV: CMT1A confirmed genetically.
Named for Jean-Martin Charcot, Pierre Marie and Howard Henry Tooth, who described it in 1886. Types are divided into demyelinating (CMT1) and axonal (CMT2) forms by nerve conduction velocity. There is no cure, so treatment relies on physical therapy, ankle-foot orthoses and orthopedic surgery. Patients should avoid drugs known to worsen neuropathy, such as vincristine.
2. Comment (cmt.)
Law & Legal · Legal Citation Abbreviations
Citation abbreviation for an official comment accompanying a section of a Restatement, uniform act, model code or the Model Rules of Professional Conduct. Comments explain the drafters' intent and give illustrations, and courts frequently rely on them.
Example: See Restatement (Second) of Torts § 402A cmt. i (Am. L. Inst. 1965) on consumer expectations.
Comments are cited by letter or number after the section, as in "U.C.C. § 2-207 cmt. 3". They are not themselves law: they persuade courts but bind them only if a legislature or court has adopted them. The plural is "cmts.", and an illustration within a Restatement comment is cited "illus."
3. Country Music Television
Organizations & Companies · Media and Broadcasting Abbreviations
Cable channel devoted to country music videos, specials and lifestyle programming. Owned by Paramount.
Example: The new video premiered on CMT before it hit YouTube.
Launched on March 5, 1983, in Nashville. The CMT Music Awards, voted by fans, are its biggest annual event. It has been part of the same corporate family as MTV and VH1 since 2000.
4. Chartered Market Technician
Education & Academia · Professional Certification Abbreviations
Designation for technical analysts, who study price charts, trends and market indicators, awarded by the CMT Association, formerly the Market Technicians Association. It requires passing three exam levels and three years of relevant experience.
Example: The strategist, a CMT, publishes a weekly chart review of the S&P 500.
Technical analysis is controversial among academic economists, many of whom favor the efficient market hypothesis. The association was founded in 1973 and is based in New York. Holders typically work as strategists, traders and portfolio managers.
