1. Chronic traumatic encephalopathy

Medical · Neurology Abbreviations

Progressive degenerative brain disease associated with repeated head impacts, such as in American football, boxing, soccer heading and military blast exposure. It is characterized by abnormal tau protein deposits around small blood vessels at the depths of brain folds.

Example: Former NFL lineman's brain donated for research; neuropathology confirmed stage III CTE.

Pathologist Bennet Omalu described CTE in former NFL player Mike Webster in 2005, and Ann McKee's group at Boston University later documented it in hundreds of brains of former athletes. It can be diagnosed definitively only at autopsy; in life, symptoms of mood change, memory loss and impulsivity are classified as traumatic encephalopathy syndrome under 2021 research criteria. Historically called "punch-drunk syndrome" or dementia pugilistica.

2. Career and technical education

Education & Academia · K-12 Education Abbreviations

Courses and programs that prepare students for careers in fields such as health sciences, information technology, construction, agriculture, culinary arts and automotive technology, often leading to industry certifications. Federal funding comes through the Perkins Career and Technical Education Act.

Example: Through the CTE pathway, she earned her CNA certification before graduating.

CTE replaced the older label "vocational education". The 2018 reauthorization, known as Perkins V, gave states more flexibility. Student organizations such as FBLA, HOSA, SkillsUSA and FFA are tied to CTE programs. Many regional technical high schools share students with several districts.

3. Coefficient of thermal expansion

Science & Engineering · Engineering Abbreviations

Fractional change in a material's length per degree of temperature change. Steel expands about 12 millionths of its length per °C and aluminum about 23, so designers must allow for movement in bridges, pipelines, electronics and assemblies of mixed materials.

Example: The CTE mismatch between the ceramic chip and the circuit board caused solder joint cracks after thermal cycling.

Reinforced concrete works partly because concrete and steel have nearly the same CTE. Expansion joints on bridges and rail lines accommodate movement. The nickel-iron alloy Invar, with very low expansion, won Charles-Édouard Guillaume the 1920 Nobel Prize in Physics.

4. Common table expression

Technology & Computing · Data & Database Abbreviations

A named temporary result set defined with a WITH clause at the start of a SQL query, which makes complex queries easier to read and allows recursive queries over hierarchies such as org charts or folder trees.

Example: Rewrite the nested subqueries as a CTE so the reporting logic reads top to bottom.

Added to the SQL standard in SQL:1999 and supported by PostgreSQL, SQL Server, Oracle, SQLite and MySQL from version 8.0. Recursive CTEs use WITH RECURSIVE to walk parent-child relationships. Older PostgreSQL versions always materialized them, which could hurt performance, until version 12 began inlining them.
