CIDP stands for Chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy, a neurology abbreviation.
Immune-mediated disease of peripheral nerves causing symmetric weakness and sensory loss in arms and legs that progresses or relapses over more than eight weeks. It is considered the chronic counterpart of Guillain-Barré syndrome.
Example: Nine months of progressive weakness, absent reflexes and demyelinating features on NCS: CIDP, IVIG maintenance.
Usage notes
Unlike Guillain-Barré syndrome, CIDP responds to corticosteroids as well as IVIG and plasma exchange. The FcRn blocker efgartigimod was approved for CIDP in 2024. Nerve conduction studies showing slowed conduction and conduction block support the diagnosis, and overdiagnosis is a recognized problem. Updated diagnostic criteria were published by the European Academy of Neurology and Peripheral Nerve Society in 2021.
