1. Arteriovenous malformation

Medical · Neurology Abbreviations

Tangle of abnormal blood vessels in which arteries connect directly to veins without an intervening capillary bed, most often in the brain or spinal cord. Brain AVMs can bleed, cause seizures or headaches, and are usually present from birth, often discovered in young adults.

Example: MRI for new seizure shows a 3 cm right parietal AVM; Spetzler-Martin grade II, neurosurgery consult.

The Spetzler-Martin grading system (1986) rates surgical risk by size, location in eloquent brain and pattern of venous drainage. Treatment options include microsurgical removal, endovascular embolization and stereotactic radiosurgery. The ARUBA trial (2014) found that medical management alone outperformed intervention for unruptured AVMs over its follow-up, though that conclusion remains debated. AVMs also occur in other organs, such as the lungs and gut.

2. Automated valuation model

Business & Finance · Real Estate & Mortgage Abbreviations

Computer model that estimates a property's value using public records, recent sales, listing data and statistical techniques, producing instant estimates such as Zillow's Zestimate.

Example: The AVM says $410,000, but it doesn't know we gutted the kitchen.

Zillow launched the Zestimate in 2006. AVMs are most accurate in neighborhoods of similar homes with many recent sales and least accurate for unusual or rural properties. Lenders use them for home equity loans and portfolio monitoring.

3. Air Vice-Marshal

Military · British Military Rank Abbreviations

Two-star RAF rank at NATO grade OF-7, equivalent to a major general or rear admiral, marked by a broad stripe plus one narrower stripe. Air vice-marshals command RAF groups and fill senior Ministry of Defence posts.

Example: AVM Harland, Air Officer Commanding No. 1 Group, briefed the defence committee.

The title dates from the RAF rank system adopted in 1919 and is used by several Commonwealth air forces. Despite the word "vice," it is not a deputy position but a substantive two-star rank.
