ASIA stands for American Spinal Injury Association, a neurology abbreviation.
Professional organization whose International Standards for Neurological Classification of Spinal Cord Injury define the standardized sensory and motor examination after spinal cord injury. Its Impairment Scale grades injuries from A (complete, with no sacral sparing) to E (normal).
Example: Neurologic level C6, ASIA B: sensory but no motor function preserved below the level.
Usage notes
The examination tests 10 key muscles and 28 sensory points on each side of the body and checks for sacral sparing, which separates incomplete from complete injuries and greatly affects prognosis. Founded in 1973. Clinicians often say "ASIA A" to describe a complete injury. Unrelated to the continent.
