ADU stands for Accessory dwelling unit, a real estate & mortgage abbreviation.
Secondary home on the same lot as a primary residence, such as a backyard cottage, garage conversion or basement apartment, with its own kitchen, bathroom and entrance.
Example: We built an ADU for my parents and will rent it out later.
Usage notes
Also called a granny flat, in-law suite or casita. California began loosening ADU rules in 2017, and many other states and cities have since reduced parking, size and owner-occupancy requirements to increase housing supply. A junior ADU (JADU) is a smaller unit within the main house.
