1. Earnings per share

Business & Finance · Accounting Abbreviations

Company's net income attributable to common shareholders divided by the weighted average number of common shares outstanding, showing profit on a per-share basis. It is the most closely watched figure in quarterly earnings reports and the denominator of the P/E ratio.

Example: Quarterly EPS of $1.42 beat the analyst consensus of $1.35.

US GAAP (ASC 260) and IFRS (IAS 33) require public companies to report both basic EPS and diluted EPS, which includes the effect of options, warrants and convertible securities. Companies often add an "adjusted" or non-GAAP EPS. Share buybacks raise EPS by reducing the share count even if total profit is unchanged.

2. Extrapyramidal symptoms

Medical · Mental Health & Psychiatry Abbreviations

Drug-induced movement disorders caused mainly by dopamine-blocking medications such as antipsychotics and some antiemetics. They include acute dystonia, akathisia (inner restlessness), drug-induced parkinsonism and, after longer exposure, tardive dyskinesia.

Example: Acute dystonia with neck twisting 2 days after haloperidol: EPS, benztropine 2 mg IM given.

"Extrapyramidal" refers to motor pathways outside the pyramidal (corticospinal) tracts, especially the basal ganglia. High-potency first-generation antipsychotics such as haloperidol cause EPS most often. Akathisia is frequently mistaken for anxiety or agitation. In cardiology EPS means electrophysiology study.

3. Electrophysiology study

Medical · Cardiology Abbreviations

Invasive procedure in which catheters are threaded through leg veins to record electrical signals inside the heart and deliberately trigger arrhythmias to map their mechanism. It is usually combined with catheter ablation and is used for SVT, ventricular arrhythmias, unexplained syncope and conduction disease.

Example: EPS induced AVNRT, and slow-pathway ablation was performed during the same session.

Performed in an EP lab under sedation, usually as a same-day procedure. Programmed electrical stimulation tests the conduction system and the inducibility of tachycardia, and 3D electroanatomic mapping builds a model of the heart chamber. In psychiatry EPS means extrapyramidal symptoms, the movement side effects of antipsychotic drugs, so context is essential.

4. Expanded polystyrene

Science & Engineering · Chemistry Abbreviations

Lightweight foam made by expanding polystyrene beads with steam and fusing them in a mold, leaving a material that is about 95-98% air. EPS forms protective packaging, coolers, insulation boards, bicycle helmet liners and disposable cups.

Example: The new wall assembly uses 4 inches of EPS insulation behind the stucco.

Often mistakenly called Styrofoam, a trademarked extruded polystyrene (XPS) product. EPS breaks easily into small beads that litter beaches and waterways, a reason many jurisdictions restrict foam food packaging. Recycling requires compacting the foam first to make transport economical.

5. Encapsulated PostScript

Technology & Computing · File Format Abbreviations

Vector graphics file format based on Adobe's PostScript language, designed to be placed inside other documents and long used for logos, illustrations and print advertising. Files usually include a low-resolution preview image.

Example: The ad agency still sends logos as EPS files for the print magazine.

EPS dates from the late 1980s and was a standard of desktop publishing. Because EPS files can contain executable PostScript code, Microsoft disabled inserting them into Office documents in 2017 after security exploits. Modern workflows usually prefer PDF or SVG instead. Opening EPS files generally requires Illustrator, Inkscape, Affinity Designer or a PostScript interpreter such as Ghostscript.

6. Entry-Level Power Supply Specification (EPS12V connector)

Technology & Computing · Computer Hardware Abbreviations

Name for the 8-pin, often split 4+4-pin, 12-volt CPU power connector between a power supply and a desktop motherboard, usually located near the top-left of the board. High-end boards have two.

Example: Plug the EPS cable into the 8-pin header next to the CPU socket before closing the case.

The connector comes from the EPS12V specification for server power supplies, part of the Server System Infrastructure (SSI) initiative, and was adopted by consumer ATX boards. EPS and PCIe 8-pin graphics plugs look similar but are wired and keyed differently, so forcing one into the other can damage hardware. In file formats, EPS means Encapsulated PostScript.
