1. Indian Administrative Service
Government & Politics · World Government Abbreviations
India's premier civil service, whose officers run district administrations as collectors and fill senior posts in state and central government ministries. Recruitment is through the highly competitive Civil Services Examination.
Example: After clearing the exam, she was allotted to the IAS and posted to Assam.
It succeeded the Indian Civil Service (ICS) of the British era in 1947. IAS officers are assigned to state cadres and can be deputed to the central government. It is one of the All India Services, along with the Indian Police Service and the Indian Forest Service.
2. International Accounting Standards
Business & Finance · Accounting Abbreviations
Accounting standards issued by the International Accounting Standards Committee between 1973 and 2001 and adopted by its successor, the IASB, many of which remain in force within IFRS. Examples include IAS 2 (inventories), IAS 12 (income taxes), IAS 16 (property, plant and equipment) and IAS 38 (intangible assets).
Example: Under IAS 16, the airline revalued its aircraft fleet and recognized the gain in other comprehensive income.
New standards issued since 2001 are called IFRS, but older IAS standards that have not been replaced keep their original names and numbers. IAS 39 on financial instruments, for example, was largely superseded by IFRS 9 from 2018. The collective term "IFRS" covers both series.
3. Indicated airspeed
Transportation & Travel · Aviation Abbreviations
Speed shown on the airspeed indicator, derived from the difference between ram air pressure in the pitot tube and static pressure. IAS governs handling: stall speeds and flap limits are published as indicated speeds, usually in knots (KIAS).
Example: Climb at 250 knots IAS until 10,000 feet, then accelerate to 300.
Indicated airspeed falls further below true airspeed as altitude increases and the air thins; at 35,000 feet an airliner showing about 280 knots indicated is moving roughly 470 knots through the air. The US 250-knot limit below 10,000 feet is an indicated airspeed limit. Calibrated airspeed corrects IAS for instrument and position errors.
