1. Alternative hypothesis
Units & Measurements · Statistics Abbreviations
The claim a statistical test seeks evidence for, contradicting the null hypothesis, written H₁ or Ha. It may be two-sided (a difference in either direction) or one-sided (a specific direction).
Example: H1: the new drug lowers mean blood pressure more than the placebo does.
Whether to use a one- or two-sided alternative should be decided before seeing the data; switching afterward inflates false positives. Statistical power is the probability of correctly rejecting H0 when H1 is true. In business, H1 means the first half of a year.
2. First half
Business & Finance · Accounting Abbreviations · also used in measurement
First six months of a fiscal or calendar year, January through June for calendar-year companies. Many European, Australian and Asian companies publish half-year (H1) results instead of, or in addition to, quarterly reports.
Example: H1 profit rose 9 percent, and the group expects similar growth in the second half.
Also written 1H, as in 1H26, or HY (half-year). UK-listed companies must publish half-yearly reports within three months of the period end. Planning documents often say "in H1" to mean the first six months without naming specific dates.
