KGB stands for Committee for State Security, a world government abbreviation.

Soviet Union's main security and intelligence agency from 1954 to 1991, responsible for foreign espionage, counterintelligence, suppression of dissent, border security and protection of leaders. Its headquarters was the Lubyanka in Moscow.

Example: Declassified KGB files revealed how informants reported on writers and artists.

Usage notes

The initials come from the Russian name Komitet gosudarstvennoy bezopasnosti. After a failed coup in August 1991, in which its chairman took part, the agency was broken up into several Russian services, including today's FSB and SVR. Belarus still calls its security service the KGB.
