1. Sustained virologic response
Medical · Infectious Disease Abbreviations
Undetectable hepatitis C RNA at a set time after completing treatment, usually 12 weeks (SVR12), which is considered a virologic cure. People who achieve SVR have much lower risks of liver failure, liver cancer and death.
Example: HCV RNA undetectable 12 weeks after DAA completion: SVR12 achieved, discharge from treatment clinic.
Patients with cirrhosis still need liver cancer surveillance after SVR because risk persists. Reinfection is possible with new exposures. In cardiology SVR means systemic vascular resistance, a hemodynamic measurement, so hepatology notes usually write SVR12 to make the meaning clear.
2. Systemic vascular resistance
Medical · Cardiology Abbreviations
Resistance the left ventricle must overcome to pump blood through the body, calculated from mean arterial pressure, central venous pressure and cardiac output. Normal values are roughly 800 to 1,200 dyn s/cm5.
Example: SVR 520 with CO 9 L/min, consistent with distributive shock from sepsis.
High SVR appears in cardiogenic and hypovolemic shock as vessels constrict to maintain blood pressure, whereas low SVR characterizes septic, anaphylactic and neurogenic shock. Vasopressors raise SVR and afterload-reducing drugs such as nitroprusside lower it. Results may also be expressed in Wood units, as is usual for pulmonary resistance.
3. Foreign Intelligence Service of the Russian Federation
Government & Politics · World Government Abbreviations
Russia's civilian foreign intelligence agency, which collects political, economic and technological intelligence abroad. Its headquarters is in the Yasenevo district of Moscow.
Example: US officials attributed the software supply-chain hack to the SVR.
It was created in 1991 from the KGB's First Chief Directorate, which ran Soviet foreign espionage. Western governments have linked hacking groups known as APT29 or Cozy Bear to the SVR. Military intelligence is handled separately by the GRU.
