TAPSE stands for Tricuspid annular plane systolic excursion, a cardiology abbreviation.
Echocardiographic measure of right ventricular function: how far the tricuspid valve ring moves toward the apex during systole, recorded with M-mode. A value below 17 mm indicates impaired right ventricular function.
Example: TAPSE 12 mm with a dilated RV; findings concerning for right heart strain from PE.
Usage notes
TAPSE is quick, reproducible and prognostic in pulmonary hypertension, pulmonary embolism and heart failure, but it captures only longitudinal motion and depends on the angle of measurement. The TAPSE-to-PASP ratio assesses how well the right ventricle copes with pulmonary pressure. Pronounced "TAP-see."
