TAVI stands for Transcatheter aortic valve implantation, a cardiology abbreviation.
European and international name for the catheter-based aortic valve procedure known in the US as TAVR. A heart team of interventional cardiologists and cardiac surgeons chooses between TAVI and surgery based on age, anatomy, frailty and surgical risk.
Example: TAVI performed under local anesthesia with conscious sedation; no new pacemaker required.
Usage notes
"Implantation" reflects that the new valve is placed inside the old one, which is not removed, whereas US terminology settled on "replacement." European guidelines weigh age heavily, favoring TAVI for older patients and surgery for younger, low-risk ones. Valve durability beyond 10 years is still being studied, which matters most for younger patients.
