1. Transmission Control Protocol

Technology & Computing · Networking Abbreviations

Provides reliable, ordered delivery of a byte stream between two hosts on top of IP. TCP opens a connection with a three-way handshake (SYN, SYN-ACK, ACK), numbers every byte, retransmits lost segments and slows down when the network is congested. Web, email and SSH traffic traditionally run over it.

Example: The firewall allows inbound TCP on port 443 only; everything else is dropped.

Described by Vint Cerf and Bob Kahn in a 1974 paper and standardized in RFC 793 in 1981, now superseded by RFC 9293 (2022). Port numbers identify the application at each end, for example 80 for HTTP and 22 for SSH. Reliability costs latency, which is why real-time voice, games and the newer QUIC protocol use UDP instead.

2. Transcutaneous pacing

Medical · Cardiology Abbreviations

Temporary emergency pacing through large adhesive pads on the chest and back, used for symptomatic bradycardia or heart block until a transvenous or permanent pacemaker can be placed. Current is increased until each pacing spike produces a QRS and a palpable pulse (capture).

Example: Complete heart block with HR 28 and hypotension: TCP started at 70 mA with capture, sedation given.

Transcutaneous pacing is painful because it stimulates chest muscles, so analgesia and sedation are given when possible. Mechanical capture must be confirmed by a pulse or arterial waveform, since artifact can mimic electrical capture on the monitor. In computing TCP means Transmission Control Protocol, a far more common meaning.

3. Traffic control point

Military · Military Term Abbreviations

Position where troops or military police control the movement of vehicles and people, checking identity, searching cargo or diverting traffic. Military police and infantry units commonly operate them.

Example: The patrol set up a TCP on the highway to search trucks for weapons.

Checkpoints are sensitive because escalation-of-force incidents can harm civilians. In computing, TCP means Transmission Control Protocol, by far the more common meaning of the letters. Signs, barriers and interpreters help reduce misunderstandings with drivers.
