QUIC stands for QUIC (originally Quick UDP Internet Connections), a networking abbreviation.
A transport protocol that runs over UDP and merges TCP-style reliability, congestion control and TLS 1.3 encryption into one layer. QUIC sets up secure connections in fewer round trips and avoids head-of-line blocking between streams, which is why HTTP/3 is built on it.
Example: Server logs show most mobile requests now arrive over QUIC rather than TCP.
Usage notes
Developed at Google by Jim Roskind starting around 2012 and standardized by the IETF as RFC 9000 in May 2021. The IETF specification treats QUIC as a name rather than an acronym, although the original Google expansion is still widely quoted. Pronounced like the word "quick". Because QUIC encrypts most of its headers, firewalls and middleboxes that inspect TCP traffic can see far less of the connection.
