TCP/IP stands for Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol, a networking abbreviation.
Name for the whole internet protocol suite, not just its two best-known protocols. The TCP/IP model organizes networking into four layers: link, internet, transport and application. The ARPANET switched to TCP/IP on January 1, 1983, a date often called the birth of the modern internet.
Example: The certification exam expects you to map each TCP/IP layer to its counterpart in the OSI model.
Usage notes
Also called the Internet protocol suite or the DoD model, because the US Department of Defense funded its development. Some textbooks describe five layers by splitting the link layer into physical and data link. Unlike the seven-layer OSI model, which was designed by committee before implementation, TCP/IP grew out of working software, and it won the protocol competition of the 1980s and 1990s.
