UTP stands for Unshielded twisted pair, a networking abbreviation.
The ordinary copper cable used for Ethernet, made of four pairs of wires twisted together to cancel interference, with no metal shielding. Category 5e, 6 and 6A UTP cables with RJ45 connectors wire nearly every office and home network.
Example: Run Cat6 UTP to each desk and terminate it at the patch panel.
Usage notes
Twisting each pair at a slightly different rate reduces crosstalk between pairs. UTP is cheaper, thinner and easier to install than shielded cable and works well for runs up to 100 meters. In electrically noisy places such as factories, shielded twisted pair (STP) or fiber may be specified instead. The twisted-pair idea dates back to 19th-century telephone lines.
