CategoriesMedical

TAVR stands for Transcatheter aortic valve replacement, a cardiology abbreviation.

Minimally invasive replacement of a narrowed aortic valve, in which a collapsible tissue valve is delivered by catheter, usually through the femoral artery, and expanded inside the diseased valve. It avoids open-heart surgery and is now used across low, intermediate and high surgical-risk patients with severe aortic stenosis.

Example: Transfemoral TAVR with a 26 mm balloon-expandable valve; discharged the next day.

Usage notes

TAVR is the term preferred in the United States, while TAVI (implantation) dominates in Europe. French cardiologist Alain Cribier performed the first human procedure in 2002; the FDA approved the first device in 2011 for inoperable patients and extended approval to low-risk patients in 2019. A conduction disturbance needing a pacemaker is one of the more common complications.
