1. Sexually transmitted infection

Medical · Infectious Disease Abbreviations

Infection passed mainly through sexual contact, including chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis, trichomoniasis, HPV, herpes and HIV. Many cause no symptoms, so screening of sexually active people is central to control and prevents complications such as infertility and pelvic inflammatory disease.

Example: STI screen today: NAAT for gonorrhea and chlamydia at three sites, syphilis and HIV serologies.

STI has largely replaced STD in guidelines because a person can carry and transmit an infection without having disease; the CDC titled its 2021 guidelines "Sexually Transmitted Infections Treatment Guidelines". The US reports roughly 2.5 million cases of chlamydia, gonorrhea and syphilis each year. Doxycycline taken after sex (doxy-PEP) is now recommended for some high-risk groups.

2. Short-term incentive

Business & Finance · Human Resources Abbreviations

Annual or more frequent bonus tied to company, team or individual performance over a year or less, typically expressed as a target percentage of base salary.

Example: The STI target for directors is 20% of base salary.

Pay disclosures pair it with LTI; in medicine, STI means sexually transmitted infection.
