UK payment to eligible employees on maternity leave for up to 39 weeks: 90% of average weekly earnings for the first six weeks, then a flat weekly rate or 90% of earnings if lower for the remaining 33 weeks.
Example: My employer tops up SMP to full pay for the first 16 weeks.
Employers pay SMP and recover most or all of it from the government. Statutory maternity leave itself lasts up to 52 weeks. Parents can convert part of it into Shared Parental Leave, paid as ShPP. Fathers and partners receive Statutory Paternity Pay (SPP).
