1. Return to office

Business & Finance · Human Resources Abbreviations · also used in general use

Employer policy requiring employees who worked remotely, especially since the COVID-19 pandemic, to come back to the workplace for a set number of days per week or full time. RTO mandates often specify badge-in tracking and consequences for noncompliance.

Example: The RTO memo says three days a week in the office starting in January.

After widespread remote work in 2020 and 2021, many employers settled on hybrid schedules, while some, such as Amazon from January 2025, required five days a week in the office. Studies disagree on productivity effects, but surveys consistently show many employees value flexibility highly. In IT, RTO means recovery time objective.

2. Regional transmission organization

Science & Engineering · Energy Abbreviations

Grid operator that manages transmission and wholesale electricity markets across several states, meeting FERC standards for independence and regional scope. PJM, serving about 65 million people from the mid-Atlantic to the Midwest, is the largest RTO in the United States.

Example: Capacity prices in the RTO's latest auction rose sharply because of data center demand.

FERC Order 2000, issued in 1999, encouraged utilities to form RTOs. The terms RTO and ISO overlap, and several organizations qualify as both. Large parts of the US Southeast and West still operate without an RTO.

3. Recovery time objective

Technology & Computing · Cloud Computing Abbreviations

The maximum acceptable time a system may stay unavailable after a disaster or outage before the business impact becomes unacceptable, used to design backup and disaster recovery strategies.

Example: The payments system has an RTO of one hour, so we keep a warm standby in another region.

Set during business impact analysis together with the recovery point objective. Shorter targets require costlier designs, from restoring backups (hours or days) to warm standby and active-active setups (minutes or seconds). Only regular recovery tests show whether the target is achievable. In workplace news RTO means return to office.

4. Return to origin

Business & Finance · E-commerce & Retail Abbreviations

Shipment sent back to the seller after delivery fails, because the customer refused it, was unreachable or gave a wrong address, a major cost in Indian e-commerce, especially for cash-on-delivery orders.

Example: COD orders have an RTO rate several times higher than prepaid ones.

Sellers reduce RTO with order confirmation calls or messages, address verification and incentives to prepay, since they typically pay shipping both ways. In HR, RTO means return to office.

5. Radiotelephone operator

Military · Military Term Abbreviations

Soldier or Marine who carries the radio for a leader and handles communications with higher headquarters, artillery and aircraft. The RTO usually stays within arm's reach of the leader.

Example: The RTO handed the handset to the lieutenant for the call to battalion.

In Vietnam, RTOs carried the heavy PRC-25 radio, and its whip antenna made them targets. The role remains essential, though digital systems have reduced the burden. Modern RTOs often carry several radios, including satellite sets, and must master call signs, frequencies and brevity codes.
