1. Teaching assistant

Education & Academia · Academic Abbreviations

Graduate student, or sometimes an advanced undergraduate, who helps run a course by leading discussion or lab sections, grading, holding office hours and answering questions. At large universities TAs often teach most of the small-group sessions in introductory courses.

Example: Email your TA if you need an extension on the lab report.

Graduate TAs usually receive a stipend and tuition waiver in exchange for about 20 hours of work a week. In K-12 schools, "teaching assistant" means a paraprofessional who supports the classroom teacher, a different job. Many graduate student unions represent TAs in contract negotiations.

2. Talent acquisition

Business & Finance · Human Resources Abbreviations

Function that finds, attracts and hires employees, covering workforce planning, employer branding, sourcing, recruiting, interviewing and offer management. It is often described as a longer-term, more strategic version of recruiting.

Example: Our TA team filled 140 roles last quarter, mostly in engineering.

Many companies renamed recruiting departments "talent acquisition" in the 2000s to signal a broader remit. In education, TA means teaching assistant, and in finance it can mean technical analysis.

3. Territorial Army

Military · Military Unit and Organization Abbreviations

Volunteer reserve of the British Army, created in 1908 as the Territorial Force and called the Territorial Army from 1921 until 2014, made up of part-time soldiers who trained in evenings and on weekends and were mobilized for both world wars and later operations in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Example: He served ten years in the TA while working as a teacher.

The TA was renamed the Army Reserve in 2014 as part of plans to rely more heavily on reservists. Members were nicknamed "weekend warriors" and "Terriers." In US usage, TA can also mean tuition assistance, the education benefit for service members.

4. Temporal artery temperature

Medical · Patient Assessment Abbreviations

Temperature measured by passing an infrared scanner across the forehead over the temporal artery, widely used in clinics, pediatrics and emergency triage because it is fast and noninvasive.

Example: TA 37.9 at triage, rechecked orally 38.3.

Sweat, hair and direct sunlight can affect readings, and the device should be used exactly as the manufacturer directs, usually sweeping across the forehead to the hairline. When fever matters for a decision, such as in young infants, a rectal temperature is preferred.

5. Tantalum (Ta)

Science & Engineering · Chemical Element Abbreviations

Phones, laptops and cars contain compact, high-capacitance capacitors made of tantalum (atomic number 73), a dense and highly corrosion-resistant metal. Body fluids do not attack it, so it is also used for surgical implants and for chemical-process equipment that must withstand acids.

Example: The board uses 47 microfarad Ta capacitors on the power rails to save space.

Anders Gustaf Ekeberg discovered tantalum in 1802 and named it after Tantalus of Greek myth, condemned to stand in water he could never drink, because the metal does not absorb acid even when immersed. For decades it was confused with niobium, its chemical twin. Coltan, an ore of tantalum and niobium mined in central Africa, is regulated as a conflict mineral in the United States.

6. Traffic advisory

Transportation & Travel · Aviation Abbreviations

TCAS caution, announced as "Traffic, traffic," indicating that another aircraft may become a collision threat, typically 20 to 48 seconds before closest approach. A TA prompts the crew to look for the traffic but commands no maneuver.

Example: We got a TA on short final when a helicopter crossed the approach path below us.

On the traffic display a TA target appears as a solid amber circle, while an RA target is a red square. Pilots are trained not to maneuver based on a TA alone. Controllers also give spoken "traffic advisories," such as "traffic, two o'clock, three miles, eastbound," a related use of the same term.
