TOIL stands for Time off in lieu, a human resources abbreviation.

Paid time off granted instead of overtime pay for extra hours worked, common in the UK, Australia, New Zealand and the public sector. Policies set how much can be accrued and how soon it must be used.

Example: I worked Saturday at the conference, so I'm taking TOIL on Monday.

Usage notes

The US equivalent, "comp time," is generally unlawful for non-exempt private-sector employees under the Fair Labor Standards Act, which requires overtime to be paid in cash; public-sector employers may offer it under 1985 amendments. Pronounced like the word "toil."
