1. Tablespoon
Units & Measurements · Cooking Abbreviations
A three-letter variant of the tablespoon abbreviation found in older cookbooks, church and community recipe collections and some product labels. It names the same measure as Tbsp: three teaspoons, roughly 15 mL, or half a US fluid ounce.
Example: Stir in 3 tbs flour and cook the roux for two minutes before adding the stock.
Often capitalized as Tbs or written with a period (tbs.). Some cooks avoid it because a hastily written tbs is easy to misread as tsp, especially in faded handwriting, and the two measures differ threefold. Usage is declining as recipe sites standardize on Tbsp and tsp.
2. Turner Broadcasting System (TBS) (TBS)
Organizations & Companies · Media and Broadcasting Abbreviations
American cable network airing comedy reruns, sports including Major League Baseball and NCAA tournament games, and reality competition shows. Owned by Warner Bros. Discovery.
Example: The playoff game is on TBS, so I'll need my cable login.
Began as Atlanta station WTCG, which Ted Turner turned into "SuperStation" WTBS, distributed nationally by satellite from 1976. The channel was named for Turner Broadcasting System, Turner's company. It aired Atlanta Braves games nationwide for decades, building the Braves a national fan base.
3. The Basic School (TBS)
Military · Military Term Abbreviations
Six-month course at Marine Corps Base Quantico, Virginia, that all newly commissioned Marine officers attend to learn the duties of a rifle platoon commander, regardless of their future specialty.
Example: Pilots, lawyers and infantry officers all go through TBS together.
The course reflects the Marine principle that "every Marine is a rifleman." At TBS, lieutenants rank their preferences and receive their military occupational specialties based on performance and the needs of the Corps. TBS also means "to be scheduled" in civilian planning.
4. Turn-based strategy (TBS)
Arts & Entertainment · Video Game Abbreviations
Strategy game in which players take turns to move units and make decisions, allowing time to plan. Examples include Civilization, XCOM and Heroes of Might and Magic.
Example: The new TBS release lets you take your time planning every move.
Turn-based strategy grew from board wargames and chess. Many TBS games are also 4X games. In US television TBS is the cable channel originally called Turner Broadcasting System's SuperStation.
