TDY stands for Temporary duty, a military term abbreviation.

Short-term assignment away from a service member's permanent duty station, such as training, an exercise or a conference, with travel costs and per diem paid by the government. Army and Air Force members use the term.

Example: She's TDY to Fort Leavenworth for three weeks of staff training.

Usage notes

TDY is generally limited to 180 days at one location; longer assignments usually require a PCS. Lodging and meal costs are paid as per diem at rates set for each locality, and claims are filed through the Defense Travel System. The Navy and Marine Corps call the same thing temporary additional duty (TAD). Frequent TDYs are a common source of family strain.
