1. Terminal Aerodrome Forecast

Transportation & Travel · Aviation Abbreviations

Coded aviation weather forecast for the area within about 5 statute miles of an airport, usually covering 24 or 30 hours and issued four times a day. It uses METAR-style codes plus change groups such as FM (from), TEMPO (temporarily) and PROB30 (30 percent probability).

Example: The TAF called for TEMPO 1SM BR between 0900Z and 1200Z, so we added an alternate to the flight plan.

Times are always in UTC. In the US, TAFs are prepared by National Weather Service forecast offices, and 30-hour TAFs are issued for major airports with long-haul traffic. Pilots use the TAF to decide whether an IFR alternate is required: under the US "1-2-3 rule," one is needed if ceilings below 2,000 feet or visibility under 3 miles are forecast within an hour of arrival.

2. Tenofovir alafenamide

Medical · Drug Abbreviations

Newer prodrug of tenofovir that delivers the drug more efficiently into cells, so lower doses produce less tenofovir in the blood and fewer kidney and bone effects than TDF. It is part of Biktarvy, Descovy, Genvoya and Vemlidy.

Example: Switch to BIC/FTC/TAF given declining eGFR on TDF.

Descovy (emtricitabine/TAF) was approved for PrEP in 2019, but not for people at risk through receptive vaginal sex because it had not been studied in that group at the time. TAF is associated with slightly more weight gain and higher lipids than TDF.
