1. Tour de France

Sports · Other Sports Abbreviations

Three-week cycling race around France each July, the most prestigious event in road cycling. Riders compete for the yellow jersey (overall), green jersey (points), polka-dot jersey (climbing) and white jersey (best young rider).

Example: Fans line the Alpe d'Huez switchbacks hours before the TdF riders arrive.

First held in 1903, organized by the newspaper L'Auto to boost sales. Jacques Anquetil, Eddy Merckx, Bernard Hinault and Miguel Indurain each won five times; Lance Armstrong's seven wins were stripped for doping in 2012. The race traditionally ends in Paris.

2. Tenofovir disoproxil fumarate (TDF)

Medical · Drug Abbreviations

Nucleotide reverse transcriptase inhibitor used to treat and prevent HIV and to treat chronic hepatitis B. Combined with emtricitabine as Truvada, it became the first approved HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) in 2012.

Example: PrEP: TDF/FTC 1 tab daily; creatinine and HIV test every 3 months.

TDF can affect kidney function and bone density, so kidney tests are monitored. Generic TDF/FTC became available in the US in 2020, making PrEP much cheaper. It is a different prodrug of tenofovir from TAF, and the two are not dose-equivalent.
