SSKI stands for Saturated solution of potassium iodide, a drug abbreviation.
Concentrated potassium iodide liquid (about 1 g per mL) used to block thyroid hormone release in thyroid storm, to prepare patients with Graves disease for thyroidectomy and to protect the thyroid after radioactive iodine exposure.
Example: SSKI 5 drops PO q6h, starting 1 hour after the first PTU dose.
Usage notes
In thyroid storm, iodine is given at least an hour after a thionamide so the thyroid cannot use it to make more hormone. SSKI is distinct from Lugol's solution (strong iodine solution), which ISMP mentions because "SSI" for sliding scale insulin can be mistaken for it. SSKI has a strong, metallic taste and is usually mixed with juice.
