rFVIIa stands for Recombinant activated factor VII, a drug abbreviation.
Clotting factor made by recombinant DNA technology, sold as NovoSeven, used to treat bleeding in hemophilia patients with inhibitors, congenital factor VII deficiency and Glanzmann thrombasthenia. It triggers clotting at sites of injury.
Example: Hemophilia A with inhibitor, joint bleed: rFVIIa 90 mcg/kg IV q2h until controlled.
Usage notes
Approved in the US in 1999, rFVIIa has been used off-label in trauma and brain hemorrhage, but trials showed no survival benefit and an increase in arterial clots, so such use is discouraged. Each dose is very expensive. Emicizumab has reduced the need for bypassing agents in hemophilia A.
